History of Islam in Vietnam
- Islam entered Vietnam around the 10th–11th centuries through Arab, Persian, Indian traders, and later Malay traders.
- Initially, Islam was mainly spread among the Cham community – an ethnic group living in the Central and Southern regions of Vietnam. After the Champa Kingdom was annexed by Dai Viet, the Cham people continued to preserve their religion.
- Over time, Islam in Vietnam developed within the framework of the Cham community and a small number of foreigners living and doing business in Vietnam.
Number of followers
According to the 2019 Population and Housing Census , Vietnam has about 80,000 – 100,000 Muslims , most of whom are Cham Bani and Cham Islam .
Most Muslims are concentrated in provinces/cities such as:
- Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan (Cham people)
- An Giang (Cham and Malay, Sunni)

Major Muslim groups in Vietnam

1. Cham Bani :
