1. Introduction to Sung Sot Cave

Located on Bo Hon island, in the center of Ha Long Bay, Bai Chay ward, Quang Ninh province, Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) is one of the most beautiful and famous caves of Ha Long Bay. 

Sung Sot Cave was formed over millions of years due to the erosion of sea water and wind, creating stalactites and stalagmites with strange and unique shapes. The name “Sung Sot” was given in 1901 by a French scientist when he first discovered this cave and was overwhelmed by its majestic beauty. It was not until 1993 that the cave officially welcomed the first visitors to admire and explore.

The road to the cave is challenging but no less interesting

When you arrive at Bo Hon Island, to get to Sung Sot Cave, you will have to climb up 50 stone steps and then continue down 10 more stone steps to reach the cave entrance. The path to the cave is located among the foliage, creating a green and quiet space.

Visitors will have to go through a narrow rock crack to enter the cave. Sung Sot Cave is 12,200 square meters wide and 30 meters high. Along the rocky road about 800m long, you will be amazed by the charming and enchanting beauty of Sung Sot Cave. It will indeed be a bit difficult to move, but what you go through will make you feel like you are on an exciting adventure and the results you get afterward are well worth it.

Visitors will see that along both sides of the stone road in the cave are quite low lampposts with soft light, enhancing the beauty of the cave.

Sung Sot Cave consists of two main compartments, each compartment will have its own attractive beauty. In the first compartment, the ceiling of the cave is covered with a layer of “velvet carpet” with sparkling bright lights. You will also be able to admire various shaped rocks such as swords, stone statues, elephants, seals,… extremely attractive and stimulating curiosity.

Entering the second compartment, the space is completely different from the first compartment, it is vast and can accommodate up to thousands of people. Continuing deeper inside, you will admire a character associated with Vietnamese legend named “Thanh Giong”. Next to the exit is a stone block shaped like Thanh Giong’s horse and sword. 

Royal garden

Going to the highest peak of Sung Sot Cave, opening before your eyes is a royal garden with a clear lake, lush trees, a gathering place for many species of birds. In particular, when sunlight shines on the trees, it will create a mysterious shadow in the middle of the cave. You can also see monkeys going down to the garden to look for fruit, it looks so fun!

3. How to get to Sung Sot Cave?

From Ha Long city center, tourists travel along Hai Quan road about 4km to reach Bai Chay Terminal. From here, you travel by canoe or boat, go south about 14km to Bo Hon Island – where Sung Sot Cave is located.

Sung Sot Cave belongs to tour route number 2 on Ha Long Bay, so to visit the cave, visitors will need to buy tickets for route number 2. This is a 6-hour day tour including experiences such as: cave exploration, kayaking, swimming, speed boating, sightseeing on the bay. Ticket prices for route 2 you can refer to as follows:

• Day ticket: about 290,000 VND/person.
• 2 days 1 night ticket: about 590,000 VND/person
• 3 days 2 nights ticket: about 790,000 VND/person

You can buy tickets at Tuan Chau International Cruise Port or Ha Long International Cruise Port.

After buying a tour ticket, you need to rent a boat to visit the bay, at a cost of: 200,000 VND/person. You will contact the ship arranger of Ha Long ship management board for them to make arrangements.
