Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, located at 1 Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, Hanoi, with an area of up to 4.5 hectares, is considered one of the largest and most modern museums in Vietnam. This place is considered a living book, recording the unique cultural features of 54 ethnic groups throughout Vietnam.
This place preserves many cultural artifacts of ethnic groups in Vietnam in different forms and criteria such as: ethnicity, uses, costumes, jewelry, agricultural tools, fishing tools, weapons, household appliances, musical instruments, religions, beliefs, weddings, funerals,…
At the museum, visitors can hire interpretation services to learn more deeply about the cultural values of the products on display. Interpretation price is 100,000 VND for indoor area in French or English.

2. Architecture of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology
The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was designed by a Tay architect, and the interior was designed by a French female architect. The museum attracts visitors by the following 3 main display areas:
Permanent display area in the Bronze Drum building
Entering the exhibition hall, visitors will be provided with a sightseeing map by the reception staff. The Bronze Drum Tower consists of 2 floors with an area of up to 2000m2, displaying all familiar items in the daily life of 54 Vietnamese ethnic groups. Specifically, it is the diversity and richness of ethnic fabrics (loincloths, dresses, scarves,…); all kinds of wicker items, baskets, trays,…; all kinds of bamboo tools and dried gourd shells; ceremonial artifacts… Besides the artifacts, in the galleries there are also photos and documentaries with 42,000 films with color photos, 373 video tapes,… reflecting all cultural aspects and features. typical in the life and creativity of ethnic groups.
And to serve and meet the needs of visitors, all information, articles, and annotations in the display are done in 3 languages: Vietnamese, English and French. Furthermore, the folded papers introducing the main contents are also used in many different languages such as: Vietnamese, English, Chinese, French, Japanese,… and are given to visitors for free.
Outdoor display area
The outdoor display area, also known as the Architecture Garden, was built from 1998 to 2006 and has an area of about 2 hectares. This place introduces visitors to 10 unique folk architectural works of 10 Vietnamese ethnic groups such as: Cham house campus, Rong Bana house, Vietnamese house, Giarai tomb house, Ede longhouse, Cotu tomb house , Tay stilt houses, Hmong bungalows, walled houses of the Ha Nhi people and half-stilt houses of the Dao people. Visitors can visit and feel the rusticity and simplicity of each ethnic group.
The garden is surrounded by many types of green trees for shade, a cool small stream gurgling on the side or a water-powered rice mortar of the Dao people. In particular, on weekends there is also a water puppet show in front of Viet’s house.

Southeast Asia exhibition area
This 4-storey building is also called the Kite Building, built in June 2007 and opened in 2013. The Kite Building displays residents outside of Vietnam such as Southeast Asian peoples.
This place is designed to simulate the shape of a kite – a typical traditional culture of Southeast Asia.
At the building, there are 4 regular themes: Southeast Asian Culture, A Glimpse of Asia, Indonesian Glass Paintings, and Around the World. There are also temporary exhibition areas, auditoriums, cinema rooms, and educational activities. With the opening of these new exhibits, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology continues to attract visitors eager to learn about civilizations in the region and around the world.
