1. General introduction to Phat Diem Cathedral
Phat Diem Cathedral with its delicate interference between Buddhism and Catholicism is a famous church for a long time, located quietly in Phat Diem town, Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province, about 28km South from Ninh Binh city center.
Phat Diem Stone Cathedral Ninh Binh was started construction in 1875 by priest Peter named Tran Luc. After 23 years of construction, in 1898 the church was officially put into operation. The church has a total area of up to 22ha, about 117m wide and 243m long.
With an age of more than a hundred years, this Catholic capital has long become a destination attracting tourists with its ancient beauty. The church uses natural stone and wood materials to build, so it is extremely sturdy.

Phat Diem Cathedral is about 125km from Hanoi city center, so if departing from Hanoi, it will take visitors about 2 hours and 30 minutes to travel.

3. Ideal time to visit Phat Diem Cathedral

4.1. Explore the Cathedral area

The cathedral is located in a central location, 74m long and 21m wide with 4 roofs and 5 entrances carved extremely delicately. The large altar is located in the main room, designed from natural stone blocks and carved with patterns.
Besides, small churches are also uniquely designed with doors, walls, columns, etc. all carved from stone. The roof is designed in a stacked roof style, and in the middle is an intermittent window to let in light and create a curvature for the roof. All wooden altar objects are painted and gilded magnificently, just like ancient pagodas and royal palaces.

Phuong Dinh means square house, it is shaped like a large bell tower, with a width of 21m, a pond of 25m, 3 floors high and square and majestic. On the top floor of Phuong Dinh there are 5 towers, in which the central tower has a bell weighing about 2 tons, each time the bell rings it can emit a sound up to 10km away.
